Why Diets Can’t Cure Food Addiction

There are so many diets available online and it seems like new ones are being invented every day. So why do so many people fail to stick to these diets, or succeed initially, but then pour the weight back on?

There are many reasons that diets fail. Some of them are listed below.

Mental Preparation/Behavioural Change – many people dread starting a diet. This means that they begin their endeavour with completely the wrong mindset. They may also have rushed into choosing a diet that doesn’t suit their lifestyle or behaviour.

Restrictive Diets – diets that are restrictive in both food type and the amount of food that can be eaten will often kick-start a person’s food cravings, causing them to be stronger – and harder to ignore – than ever.

Diet Obsession – if a person becomes obsessed with a diet then they often make drastic changes to their routine and lifestyle to keep it up. This can be hard to maintain, and when the person slips-up (everybody does) then they are likely to crash back into addictive bingeing.

Low Nutrition – if your brain thinks that it’s being starved it will go into starvation mode. This not only increases food cravings but also means that your body will begin to store fat as a survival method. It is extremely difficult to achieve any long-term weight loss in this situation.

Unenjoyable – diets can be boring, complicated, restrictive and sometimes expensive. Most people consider them to be a short-term fix and can’t wait to finish them. These types of diets are impossible to stick to and often end up with people falling off the wagon indefinitely.

Lack of Support – most diets don’t come with the support network you need to succeed and realistically most people have social calendars that they don’t want to lose. Eating out, dinner at friends’ houses, or even going for drinks can all be high-risk times when you are more likely to break your diet.

Trigger Foods – failing to identify your trigger foods can be a dangerous mistake. These are the foods you can’t help but crave because you are literally addicted to them. If you are not aware of your trigger foods, then you will continue to fail and may blame yourself for something that is entirely not your fault.

Food Addiction – often people will say ‘I used to be able to diet successfully – why can’t I now? As food addictions progress and grow (like any chronic disease) it becomes harder to manage and harder to control strong food cravings.

The answer to all the above problems could be addressing food addiction. There is a growing percentage of the population who are overweight and addicted to food. They focus on losing weight fast, and they may initially succeed, but ultimately the addiction itself is not addressed. Diets fail for many different reasons, but in the case of food addiction, it’s the addiction that must be approached first,  before weight loss can be achieved.
